Since the beginning of the pandemic, SYNLAB has been at your side to advise and support you in your daily work. Most importantly, SYNLAB is actively contributing to the chain of infection interruption through virus screening : RT-PCR and serological tests are carried out in our laboratories day and night.
What does the virus consist of?
The virus causing the current coronavirus epidemic is called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Patients with COVID-19 mainly have mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of fever, cough, shortness of breath. Some patients progress to bilateral pneumonia, multi-organ failure and, in some cases, death.
What is SYNLAB’s role?
SYNLAB offers the qualitative PCR detection test to amplify the viral RNA of CoV-2 SARS. This test is the most reliable test to detect the virus in the acute phase.
The serological test can also be performed by SYNLAB to detect whether the patient has been in contact with the disease or has developed antibodies.
Finally, rapid antigen tests are also offered by SYNLAB but only for symptomatic patients in well-defined clinical situations. See SYNFO Covid #9 for details (currently not available in english).
At this time of the year it is difficult to distinguish Covid-19 symptoms from those of influenza, therefore, in the case of respiratory symptoms with a negative SARS-CoV-2 result, SYNLAB offers an additional test, upon request, for the PCR detection of influenza A/B and RSV. On request, it is also possible to test a complete respiratory panel, which identifies numerous acute respiratory agents (multiplex PCR Respiratory Panel), from the same nasopharyngeal swab.
For more information on the tests and their specificities, we recommend that you consult our various SYNFOs (available in de, fr and it).
What measures should I take to protect myself from the virus?
In order to contain the infection, please follow the updated instructions of the cantonal health authorities and the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).
